  • spouse or common-law partner is deceased
  • allowance continues until the recipient turns 65, remarries, or begins a new common-law marital relationship

Eligibility To qualify all of the following conditions must be met:
  • aged 60 to 64 (includes the month of 65th birthday)
  • Canadian citizen or legal resident
  • reside in Canada and have resided in Canada for at least 10 years since the age of 18
  • spouse or common-law partner has died and have not remarried or entered into a common-law relationship
  • annual income is less than the maximum annual threshold, see website for details
Application
  • Apply 6 to 11 months before 60th birthday
  • apply in writing by mail
  • application and required documents available on website
