Description (Service)

Write letters on behalf of non-violent prisoners of conscience in foreign countries whose human rights have been violated as well as human rights issues in Canada

  • On December 10th each year, local group holds an Amnesty International Flag Raising at the City of Barrie at 11 am
    • the Mayor or a City Representative helps to raise the Flag in honour of International Human Rights Day
    • Human Rights cases are highlighted during this event and people are welcome to sign letters and petitions
    • focus is on school groups attending, but all are welcome, local group promotes an annual friendly letter write-a-thon for schools and youth groups
    • In November an event Write for Rights is held at the Downtown Branch of the Barrie Public Library, check calendar for the date
    • letters are written to help draw attention to individuals suffering from human rights’ abuses and to offer support to Human Rights defenders around the world
    • www.amnesty.ca has a write-a-thon kit of resources and current Human Rights cases, some are ongoing and some are urgent
    • registration starts in October, anyone interested in participating should email Doreen at dtef1@yahoo.com for more information
  • holds local monthly book club via Zoom or in the Library on the second Thu of the month from Sep-May
  • National office is a registered charitable organization
