Description

Description (Service) Advisory committee to City Council on the historical and architectural importance of buildings and other heritage matters in Barrie, committee is appointed by City Council
  • Committee meets monthly to discuss heritage matters, add properties to the Municipal Heritage Register, purchase plaques, plan and participate in events, etc.,
  • monthly meetings are open to the public, for information and meeting details see the Heritage Barrie committee agenda on the City of Barrie legislative calendar available, barrie.legistar.com/Calendar.aspx
  • in association with the Barrie Historical Association, publishes seven brochures of self-guided Walking Tours, including Downtown East, Downtown West, Allandale, Grand Homes, Rodney and Blake Streets, Discovering the Waterfront, H-Block and Court House Hill, From Portage to Prosperity - a Brief History of Barrie, Ontario (From Portage to Prosperity currently out of print)
    • print copies are available in limited quantities at City Hall, Planning Services Department and Tourism Barrie, while supplies last
    • online versions available on the Tourism Barrie website, see HeritageWalkingTours and are mapped at Discover Barrie
    • Note, new historic neighbourhood guides are currently in development and awaiting print
  • Maintains an inventory of historical markers and plaques
  • Hosts the annual Barrie Heritage Awards
  • Maintains a municipal Heritage Registry with a complete list of designated properties and properties that are not designated but are considered to be of interest, see Municipal Heritage Registry
