• Use door #2 of the Barrie by the Bay Building, walk straight down the hallway. When you reach the last corridor, turn right, and we are the first door on your left

• The first two rows, closest to the building are paid, everything else is free
• NOTE: There are more spaces around the side of the building. Drive toward the front of the building, turn left and proceed until you reach the end of the building, then right and then drive over the little bridge on your left, the parking lot is right there

Literacy and foundational skills training including numeracy, digital (computer basics and beyond basics), communication and interpersonal skills

• helps learners prepare for employment, apprenticeship, secondary-school credit, post-secondary education and greater independence
• Services are provided through independent study; tutoring; small groups
• adult literacy tutoring is individual, confidential and geared to the student's needs and abilities
• digital literacy - pre-assessment to determine which level is best suited
  • Basics - how to operate a computer for work or school with increased independence - intro to computer, internet, websites and privacy. Writing, sending, receiving emails and attachments
  • Beyond Basics - focus on Microsoft Office - Word, Excel, PowerPoint for employment or school
• meetings are usually held at the Barrie Literacy Council

Tutoring

• Tutor Training Information Sessions are required to find out what is involved with being a tutor to another adult
  • If you decide to become a tutor, the Tutor Training Workshop (about 10 hours) prepares you before being matched with an adult student
  • Ongoing assistance from staff is provided once you start
• criminal background check with vulnerable sector screening mandatory for volunteers

• Our learners come from a variety of backgrounds and are working to build foundational skills and building blocks of English literacy to support their personal, academic, or career goals
• Requirements of volunteers - strong command of spoken and written English, fundamentals of English grammar, sentence structure and vocabulary and clear and understandable English pronunciation
• provide training and ongoing support, no formal teaching experience is necessary—just patience, empathy, and a strong grasp of English
